What kind of filler from a poultry pellet mill is best suited for ruminant feed?

High-fiber fillers suitable for ruminant animal feed
- High-quality hay meal: such as alfalfa meal, sheepgrass meal, ryegrass meal, etc. These materials are the gold standard fillers for ruminant feed, with a crude fiber content of 25%-35%, and are rich in protein and calcium. Alfalfa meal has a high protein content (15%-20%), and adding 20%-30% to dairy and beef cattle feed can promote rumen digestion and increase milk production and weight gain. Sheepgrass meal has good fiber toughness and is suitable for meat sheep feed; adding 25%-35% can enhance satiety. When choosing, prioritize hay meal processed from fresh hay and avoid products that are yellowed or moldy.
- Root vegetable processing by-products: such as beet pulp, carrot pulp, sweet potato pulp, etc. These materials have a moderate crude fiber content (18%-25%) and are rich in pectin and sugar, making them palatable. Beet meal is a preferred choice for ruminants. Adding 15%-25% to cattle feed can promote rumen fermentation and improve feed conversion ratio. Carrot pomace contains vitamin A; adding 10%-20% is suitable for calves and lambs, enhancing their immunity. These materials have a high moisture content and must be dried to below 12% before use to prevent clumping during extrusion.
- Lignin-modifying materials: such as peanut shell powder and cottonseed hull powder (detoxified). These materials require extrusion puffing to reduce lignin hardness and improve digestibility. Adding 10%-15% peanut shell powder to cattle feed after processing can supplement crude fiber; adding 8%-12% detoxified cottonseed hull powder is suitable for sheep feed. Before use, it is essential to ensure complete detoxification to avoid residual toxins such as gossypol.

Precautions for use
For foam-resistant fillers, the temperature parameters of the fish food production machine must be adjusted accordingly. For starch-based materials, the barrel temperature needs to be raised to 100-110℃ to ensure full gelatinization. Moisture-absorbing materials such as seaweed powder should be prepared and used immediately to avoid clumping after pre-mixing. Different aquatic species have different foam resistance requirements; shrimp and crab feed requires a foam resistance time of over 30 minutes, while ordinary fish feed can be controlled at 15-20 minutes. Adjust the type and proportion of filler as needed. After use, clean the extruder die head to prevent residual adhesive from hardening and clogging the channels.
