Does a feed extruder machine require raw material crushing?

When using an animal feed extruder to make fish and shrimp feed, the raw materials must be crushed and ground very finely. Why? Fish and shrimp have small mouths and weak digestive abilities. If the raw materials contain large particles, firstly, they cannot be pressed into compact small pellets, and secondly, the fish and shrimp cannot swallow or chew them. Even if they eat them, they cannot digest them, leading to waste and potential stomach upset.

For example, if you're using corn and soybean meal to make shrimp feed, simply pouring in whole corn kernels won't work. The feed expander will get stuck, and the resulting feed will be loose and fall apart as soon as it's soaked in water. The correct method is to crush the raw materials first. Grind the corn into a fine powder of about 80 mesh using a grinder, roughly as fine as flour. If the soybean meal is in blocks, it also needs to be crushed into powder and mixed evenly with fishmeal and calcium powder before feeding it into the pellet mill.

If you don't have a large grinder at home, a small household grinder will suffice. A hand-cranked grinder costing tens of dollars or an electric grinder costing hundreds of dollars will do. Grinding a dozen or so kilograms at a time is enough for a small pond for one or two days. Remember, the finer the raw materials are ground, the smoother and more resistant the feed pellets will be to soaking, making them taste better to fish and shrimp and accelerating their growth.
