How can I troubleshoot when the extruder won’t rotate?

If the screw of the extruder does not rotate at all and there is no power response after starting the machine, the primary focus of troubleshooting should be the motor and power supply system-for example, a power outage caused by a circuit breaker tripping in the workshop, or the motor coil burning out due to prolonged high-load operation. Blindly forcing the machine to start in these situations will not only delay production but may also cause secondary damage to the motor, increasing maintenance costs.

Fault Causes and Solutions

1.Power outage or poor contact in the power supply system

Causes: The workshop's main distribution box tripped due to a short circuit (e.g., leakage from other equipment), or the circuit breaker for the extruder had poor contact (oxidized terminals, loose screws); the motor power cord's insulation layer broke due to long-term vibration and wear (e.g., near transmission components), causing a circuit break and preventing the motor from receiving power.

Solutions: First, check the workshop's main distribution box. If it tripped, check for leaking equipment (disconnect the power to other equipment and reset the tripped switch); open the extruder motor junction box, tighten any loose terminals with a screwdriver, and sand down oxidized contacts to ensure good line contact; use a multimeter to check the continuity of the power cord. If an open circuit is found, replace it with a copper core cable of the same specification (e.g., a 10mm² cable for a 37kW motor), and protect the line (keep it away from transmission components and use insulating sleeves).

2.Motor overload protection triggered or parameters inaccurate

Cause: The extruder barrel was not cleaned during the last shutdown, and the residual raw material hardened, causing the screw to jam. Upon startup, the motor load suddenly increases (current exceeds the rated value by 1.8 times), triggering the built-in thermal relay to automatically cut off the power. Alternatively, the thermal relay parameters may be set too low (e.g., a 37kW motor with a rated current of 70A is set to 50A), causing a false triggering of the protection during normal startup.

Solution: Press the thermal relay "reset" button and wait 15 minutes (to allow the relay to cool down fully); remove the barrel end cover and use a special tool to clean the hardened raw material inside (high-sugar raw materials can be softened by injecting 70℃ warm water); recalibrate the thermal relay parameters according to the motor nameplate (set the rated current to 1.1-1.2 times the motor's rated value) to ensure accurate protection.

3.Motor coil burnout or bearing jamming
Causes: The motor has been operating with one phase missing for a long time (e.g., one phase missing in a three-phase power supply), or the coil insulation varnish has aged due to high temperature (affected by heat dissipation from the extruder barrel), causing the coil to short-circuit and burn out; the motor bearings are jammed due to dust intrusion (raw material dust entering the motor) or dried grease, preventing the balls from rotating (only a "humming" sound is emitted after power is applied).

Solutions: Use a multimeter to test the insulation resistance of the motor coil. If the resistance is 0 (short circuit) or infinite (open circuit), a professional electrician needs to disassemble the motor and replace the coil (ensuring the coil turns and wire diameter are consistent with the original model); remove the motor end cover, clean the dust inside the bearing, and if the bearing is worn (gap exceeding 0.6mm), replace it with a high-precision bearing of the same model (e.g., SKF 6322 model suitable for a 37kW motor), and add high-temperature lithium-based grease (filling 2/3 of the bearing's internal space).
