What are the signs of poor performance in fish and shrimp feed pellets?
Leave a message
Some fish farmers have noticed that their fish and shrimp eat a lot of feed but grow slowly. For example, feeding them 10 jin (5 catties) of feed a day only results in a 1 jin (0.5 catties) weight gain, much less than expected. Some fish and shrimp also have whitish, sticky feces, sometimes containing undigested feed particles. This isn't because the fish and shrimp are sick, but rather because the feed has poor nutrient absorption. The nutrients they ingest aren't being digested, resulting in wasted feed and increased strain on their digestive system.
Four Specific Manifestations of Poor Nutrient Absorption in Aquatic Feed
1. Slow Fish and Shrimp Growth: Eats a Lot, Gains Little Weight
Under normal circumstances, feeding 1 ton of bass feed will result in a weight gain of 300-400 catties. If feeding 1 ton of feed only results in a weight gain of 200 catties, this indicates slow growth. This is mostly due to the protein in the feed being "difficult to digest" (e.g., using inferior fishmeal, causing protein denaturation), or the feed not being finely ground in the production line (the raw material particles are too coarse for the fish and shrimp's digestive system to break down). The fish and shrimp eat a lot, but the nutrients are not absorbed, naturally resulting in slow growth, extended farming cycles, and increased costs.
2.Abnormal Fish and Shrimp Feces: White, Sticky, or Containing Feed Residue
Healthy fish and shrimp feces should be brown, formed, and odorless. If the feces are white (like lime), sticky (adhering to the bottom of the water or on the fish), or even contain undigested feed particles, it indicates poor nutrient absorption. This is caused by excessive coarse fiber in the feed (such as the use of untreated straw powder) or the addition of additives that fish and shrimp cannot digest (such as certain cheap minerals). Undigested nutrients ferment in the intestines, causing diarrhea and affecting the health of fish and shrimp.
3.Fish and shrimp have poor disease resistance:
prone to colds and gill rot. Poorly absorbed feed not only fails to provide sufficient nutrition but also weakens their constitution. For example, in winter when water temperatures are low, fish fed poor-quality feed are prone to "water mold disease"; in summer when water quality is poor, they are prone to gill and tail rot, while fish fed good-quality feed rarely get sick. This is because poor-quality feed lacks vitamins and minerals (such as too little vitamin C) or contains harmful substances (such as toxins produced by moldy raw materials). Long-term consumption by fish and shrimp will lower their immunity.
4. Low feed conversion ratio:
More feed, higher costs. Feed conversion ratio is the ratio of feed required to increase fish weight by 1 pound. A normal feed conversion ratio for bass is 2.5-3:1 (2.5-3 pounds of feed are needed to increase fish weight by 1 pound). If the ratio exceeds 4:1 (4 pounds of feed are needed to increase fish weight by 1 pound), it's considered low, and nutrient absorption will be poor. This significantly increases farming costs. For example, to raise 1000 pounds of bass, you'd need 2500-3000 pounds of good feed, or 4000 pounds of poor feed, resulting in an extra several thousand yuan in costs.
A helpful tip
When raising fish and shrimp, regularly weigh a few fish to calculate their growth rate and feed conversion ratio; at the same time, observe their feces – if you find slow growth or abnormal feces, change the feed immediately. Don't wait until the fish and shrimp get sick before changing the feed, as this will result in greater losses.
