What oil does a poultry feed pellet machine need?

The oil requirements for feed pellet machines are not "one size fits all". Different components have different operating loads, temperatures, and functions, and the corresponding oil types are also completely different. We mainly focus on four core components: transmission gearbox, rotating bearing, chain (some models have it), hydraulic system (some models have it). The oil selection logic of each component has clear standards. A wrong selection may result in hundreds or even thousands of yuan in repair costs.

Oil selection for each component: specific model + reasons for adaptation + pitfalls to avoid

1. Transmission Gearbox: Must use "medium-duty industrial gear oil" with a viscosity of 150# or 220#.
The gearbox is the core of the pellet mill's power transmission. The gears bear heavy loads during meshing, and temperatures can reach 60-80°C during operation. Ordinary motor oil's oil film is insufficiently strong and easily breaks, causing dry grinding of the gears.

Recommended Engine Oil: Medium-duty industrial gear oil (such as L-CKC grade), preferably with a viscosity of 150#. If the equipment is used in cold northern regions, or in winter with ambient temperatures below 0°C, switch to a 100# viscosity to prevent the oil from solidifying at low temperatures and affecting lubrication.

Tips to Avoid: Do not use automotive engine oil as a substitute! Automotive engine oil focuses on "high-temperature oxidation resistance" rather than "load-resistant wear." Using automotive engine oil in the gearbox will cause scratches on the gear surfaces within a month, and in severe cases, can lead to gear misalignment. Replacement cycle: If the machine is turned on for more than 8 hours a day, change it every 3 months; if it is intermittent production (2-3 hours a day), it can be extended to 6 months. Before changing the oil, remember to flush the inside of the gearbox with new oil to avoid impurities remaining in the old oil.

2. Rotating Bearings: Choose "High-Temperature Anti-Wear Grease" with a dropping point ≥180°C.

The roller and spindle bearings of the pellet mill rotate rapidly (up to hundreds of revolutions per minute). Friction against metal parts generates temperatures of 100-120°C. Ordinary calcium-based grease (commonly known as "butter") melts and runs off at temperatures above 80°C, causing the bearings to dry-grind and seize.

Recommended Engine Oil: High-Temperature Anti-Wear Grease. Lithium-based grease (such as ZL-3) or lithium-complex grease should be preferred. The dropping point must be ≥180°C to ensure it remains solid and adheres to the bearing surface in high-temperature environments.

Tips to Avoid: Don't Overfill! Many users believe that "more grease, the better." However, overfilling can block the bearing's heat dissipation channels, further increasing the temperature and accelerating grease melting. Fill only about one-third of the bearing's internal space. Replenishment frequency: If the machine is on for more than 8 hours a day, replenish once a week; if the production is intermittent, check once every 2 weeks. If the grease is found to be dry or lumpy, clean it in time and refill it.

3. Chain Drive (available on some flat die machines): Use a dedicated "chain lubricant" instead of gear oil.

In pellet mills with chain drives (mostly small flat die machines), the chain is exposed to the air, vibrating during operation and easily picking up feed dust. Ordinary engine oil has poor adhesion and can be shaken off by vibration or contaminated by dust, causing the chain to rust and jam.

Recommended engine oil: Chain lubricant (such as L-AN46). This type of oil contains adhesives that firmly adhere to the gaps between the chain links, while also preventing dust and rust, and reducing chain wear.

Tips to avoid: Avoid mixing with gear oil! Gear oil with excessive viscosity will attract a large amount of dust, increasing chain resistance and accelerating chain wear. In severe cases, the chain may become stuck and then break. Usage tips: When adding lubricating oil, first clean the dust on the surface of the chain, then use a brush to evenly apply the oil on the chain links to avoid dripping and waste; if the chain is rusted, clean it with diesel before adding oil.

4. Hydraulic System (Required by Hydraulic Ring Die Machines): "Anti-wear Hydraulic Oil," Viscosity 46# or 68#

In pellet mills with hydraulically adjustable dies (such as large hydraulic ring die machines), the hydraulic system transmits pressure through oil to control die tension. Ordinary engine oil has poor foam resistance and can easily generate bubbles during operation, leading to unstable pressure, inaccurate die adjustment, and even damage to the hydraulic pump.

Recommended engine oil: Anti-wear hydraulic oil (such as L-HM#46 or L-HM#68). 46# is suitable for ambient temperatures (0-30°C), while 68# is suitable for high temperatures (above 30°C). It inhibits bubble formation and reduces wear on the hydraulic pump and cylinder.

Tips to Avoid: Avoid using old, deteriorated oil! If hydraulic oil turns black or has an unpleasant odor, it indicates oxidation and deterioration.

Continued use can clog the hydraulic filter, preventing the hydraulic system from building up pressure. Be sure to completely drain the old oil when replacing it. Inspection method: Open the hydraulic oil tank cap every week to observe whether the oil is clear. If impurities or moisture are found in the oil, replace and clean the oil tank in time to prevent impurities from entering the hydraulic pump.
