Can an extruded feed pellet mill make feed from any raw materials?

Many feed mills worry about the difficulty of finding raw materials-for example, they might want to switch to cheaper insect protein or straw powder, but worry that ordinary pellet mills can't handle it; some raw materials are too wet or sticky, causing them to clump and clog the machine as soon as they enter. However, those who have used extruded feed pellet mills will find that they seem to be "not picky about raw materials"-whether it's dry cornmeal, sticky algae paste, or high-fiber straw powder, they can all be made into qualified feed. Is this its main characteristic? What technology supports this?

It can handle almost everything, from conventional to new materials.

1. High-moisture raw materials: No drying required, use directly. Ordinary pellet mills struggle with overly moist raw materials (clogging if moisture content exceeds 15%), but extrusion pellet mills can handle raw materials with 18%-25% moisture content-such as fresh algae (22% moisture) and freshly pressed soybean meal residue (20% moisture). No pre-drying is needed; they can be directly mixed with other raw materials before feeding into the machine. High-temperature heating evaporates some of the moisture, and high-pressure extrusion kneads the wet raw materials into a uniform "clump," preventing clumping and screw blockage.

2. High-fiber raw materials: No pre-treatment required, directly crushed. Raw materials with high coarse fiber content (15%-30% coarse fiber), such as straw powder and bran, are difficult for ordinary pellet mills to crush and can wear down the screw. However, the screw of an extrusion pellet mill has a "shearing thread"-it acts like scissors to cut and grind the coarse fiber during rotation. Combined with high temperature, the fiber softens (becoming more resilient), and finally, it is mixed with starch and protein to form pellets. For example, adding 20% straw powder to chicken feed will still produce a compact pelleted feed that chickens can digest.

3. New Specialty Raw Materials: No separate processing required, directly mixed. Currently popular new raw materials such as insect protein (e.g., black soldier fly powder), fish oil, and probiotics are either unevenly mixed in ordinary pellet mills (e.g., fish oil sticking to the pellet surface) or the high temperature kills the probiotics. Extruded pellet mills, however, have a special "additive addition port"-allowing probiotics to be added just before extrusion (avoiding the high-temperature section, increasing the survival rate by over 60%). Fish oil can also be evenly sprayed into the pellets through a special nozzle, preventing it from sticking to the sides.
