Can an extruder be used to make dog food

Dog food extrusion machines are perfectly suited for producing dog food and are currently the core equipment in commercial dog food production. The key reason lies in the high degree of alignment between their processing characteristics and the demands of dog food production, primarily in three aspects.
First, the mixing and shaping capabilities of the screw pet feed extruder are well-suited to the multi-ingredient nature of dog food. Dog food ingredients are complex, typically containing animal proteins such as chicken and beef meal, energy sources like corn and oats, and trace elements such as vitamins and minerals. The extruder's twin-screw structure generates strong shear and mixing forces through counter-rotation, thoroughly grinding and blending ingredients of different densities and states into a homogeneous paste, solving the problem of uneven mixing of multiple ingredients. Simultaneously, the die at the extruder's end can be changed to different apertures and shapes to easily produce dog food pellets in various sizes, such as cylindrical and bone-shaped, meeting the feeding needs of dogs of different sizes-a shaping advantage that ordinary mixing equipment cannot achieve.
Second, the high-temperature, high-pressure process ensures the nutritional value and safety of the dog food. Dog food production must balance nutrient retention and microbial safety. The extrusion chamber of a dog feed machine creates a high-temperature environment of 100-140℃ and a high-pressure environment of 3-8MPa. Under these conditions, the starch in the raw materials is fully gelatinized, increasing the digestibility and absorption rate for dogs from 65% in conventional processes to over 85%. It also destroys anti-nutritional factors (such as trypsin inhibitors) in raw materials like chicken meal and soybean meal, preventing them from hindering protein absorption. More importantly, the high temperature and pressure instantly kill any harmful bacteria, such as Salmonella and E. coli, that may be present in the raw materials, achieving a kill rate of over 99.9%, fundamentally ensuring the safety of the dog food.
Important precautions for using a dog pellet making machine to produce dog food also need to be carefully considered. Firstly, proper pretreatment of raw materials is crucial. All solid raw materials must be pre-crushed to 80-120 mesh to avoid large particles causing equipment blockage or uneven forming. The moisture content of the raw materials should be controlled between 12% and 15%; too high a moisture content will cause the material to stick to the chamber walls, while too low a moisture content will generate a large amount of dust. Secondly, process parameters must be precisely controlled. When producing puppy food, the extrusion temperature should be lowered to 80-90℃ to avoid high temperatures damaging the heat-sensitive nutrients needed by puppies. When producing large-sized dog food, the die orifice diameter can be appropriately increased to 4-5mm, while the pressure can be increased to 6-7MPa to ensure that the pellets are firm and chewy. Thirdly, the equipment must be thoroughly cleaned. After each production run, the extrusion chamber and die should be blown out with compressed air, and residual raw materials should be cleaned with special tools to prevent mold contamination in the next production run.
