What are the differences between a fish feed pellet extruder and a pet food pellet machine?

One of the core differences lies in the control of processing temperature and pressure. Fish feed requires higher temperatures and pressures to achieve full expansion, enhancing water resistance and digestibility. The barrel temperature of a floating fish feed pellet making machine is typically controlled at 110-130℃, with a working pressure of 3-8 MPa. In contrast, cat and dog pet food often contains heat-sensitive ingredients such as probiotics and vitamins; excessively high temperatures can lead to nutrient loss. Pet food processing machines typically control the processing temperature at 80-100℃, with relatively lower pressures (1-3 MPa). Some high-end pet food equipment even includes a low-temperature processing module, while fish feed pellet extruders do not require this design.

There are also significant differences in mold and pellet structure design. Small fish feed machines have smaller die apertures (typically 1-5mm) and special pressure-reducing channels inside the die to ensure a uniform porous structure when the pellets are discharged, while maintaining a smooth surface to reduce solubility in water. Cat and dog pet food machines have larger die apertures (3-10mm), focusing more on pellet hardness and shape diversity to meet pets' chewing needs. The internal porous structure of the pellets is not required, so the die design is relatively simple and does not require special pressure-reducing structures.

The raw material compatibility design differs. Fish feed ingredients have a high proportion of fishmeal, algae, and other aquatic raw materials. These raw materials have high protein content and high viscosity. The screw pitch and barrel inner wall design of fish feed pellet extruders focus more on enhancing material conveying and mixing capabilities to prevent raw material sticking. Cat and dog pet food has a high proportion of grains and meat by-products, with a relatively loose texture. The feeding and extrusion system design of their equipment focuses more on preventing material slippage and ensuring smooth feeding.

Furthermore, small fish feed machines are typically equipped with more efficient cooling systems to quickly lower the temperature of the extruded pellets and prevent pellet deformation, while pet food equipment cooling systems focus more on preserving the flavor of the feed and improving palatability. Understanding these differences is crucial for selecting the right equipment based on production needs.
