What are the possible causes of motor overload malfunction in a feed pellet maker machine?

A feed mill pellet machine might suddenly experience a "motor overload" during operation. The ammeter would display a current far exceeding the rated value (for example, a 15kW motor rated for 30A might actually exceed 45A), triggering the overload protection circuit breaker and halting normal production. Forcing the machine back on could burn out the motor (with repair costs exceeding 2,000 yuan) and damage components like the screw and ring die due to the overload, seriously impacting production progress.

Cause and Solution

1.Raw material blockage in the barrel

Causes: The raw material has excessive moisture content (over 18%) or is agglomerated (agglomerated material diameter exceeds 10mm). After entering the barrel, it adheres to the screw surface, forming a "material blockage," leading to a significant increase in screw rotation resistance and motor load; or the feeding speed is too fast (e.g., the feeder speed is too high), causing excessive material accumulation in the barrel, which cannot be extruded in time.

Solutions: Immediately stop the machine, close the feed valve, remove the barrel end cover, and use a special tool (such as a material hook) to clean the blockage in the barrel (if the raw material is hardened, it can be softened by soaking in 60℃ warm water for 10 minutes before cleaning); check the feeder speed, if it is too high, reduce the speed (from 40r/min to 30r/min) to ensure that the feed rate matches the barrel's extrusion capacity; use a vibrating screen to screen agglomerated raw materials before feeding (agglomerated materials must be crushed before use).

2. Screw and Barrel Jamming

Causes: Worn screw bearings (clearance exceeding 0.5mm), causing screw eccentricity and friction against the inner wall of the barrel; or hardened material residue inside the barrel (such as from previous production) gets stuck between the screw and barrel, causing jamming and increasing motor load.

Solutions: Disassemble the screw bearing and check for wear. If the bearing clearance exceeds the standard or the raceway has scratches, replace the bearing with a new one (use a high-precision bearing, such as SKF or NSK); clean the hardened material residue inside the barrel and sand the inner wall of the barrel (remove scratches to prevent re-jamming); when reassembling the screw, ensure that the coaxiality error between the screw and barrel is ≤0.1mm.

3.Poor Motor Heat Dissipation

Causes: Damaged motor fan (such as broken blades), or dust blocking the motor's heat dissipation holes (dust thickness exceeding 2mm), leading to decreased motor heat dissipation efficiency, increased temperature (exceeding 80℃), triggering overload protection; or insufficient motor preheating in winter, resulting in excessive resistance and a sudden increase in current during startup.

Solution: Check the motor fan. If damaged, replace it. Use compressed air (0.6-0.8 MPa) to blow through the motor's cooling holes to remove dust. Preheat the motor before starting (e.g., using a preheater for 20 minutes or jogging the motor 5-6 times) to ensure the motor temperature reaches 15-20°C before starting. If the ambient temperature is too high (over 35°C), install an industrial fan near the motor to improve heat dissipation.
