A seal issue is causing the pellet mill bearing to leak oil.

Many people panic when they see oil stains near the bearings of a pellet mill, fearing a major malfunction. However, most of the time, oil leaks are due to minor issues with the seals, such as hardened sealing rings or improperly installed gaskets. Don't underestimate these sealing components; they act like a "waterproof coat" for the bearing. Once this "waterproof coat" breaks, oil will naturally leak. Below, we'll look at the specific causes of oil leaks due to seals and their solutions.

Causes of Oil Leakage

1. Seal aging: The bearings in a pellet mill generate heat during operation, and combined with the vibrations from the machine, the seals are exposed to high temperatures and vibrations for extended periods. This causes them to gradually harden and lose elasticity, widening the gaps that were once tightly fitted, allowing lubricating oil to leak out. Generally, seals tend to age within 1-2 years, especially in pellet mills that operate continuously, where the aging process is accelerated.

2. Damaged seals: If too much force is used when installing seals, or if the edge of the seal ring is accidentally touched with a tool, small cuts will be made in the seal. In addition, when the pellet mill is working, dust and debris may enter near the bearing. These impurities will wear down the surface of the seal, and over time, holes will be worn out, leading to oil leakage.

3. Improper seal installation: If the sealing ring or gasket is installed backwards (e.g., the lip side is not facing the inside of the bearing), or not in the designated position and does not fully fit the bearing's sealing groove, gaps will remain, allowing lubricating oil to leak out. Some people also fail to clean dust from the sealing groove when installing seals, resulting in impurities between the seal and the groove, preventing a tight fit.

Solution

1. Replacing aged seals: First, turn off the pellet mill power, remove the bearing end cover, and remove the aged sealing ring or gasket, remembering the original installation direction. Then, purchase a new seal of the same specification as the bearing (e.g., if the original sealing ring was 50×70×10, buy the same size). Before installation, apply a thin layer of lubricant to the lip of the seal, then gently press it into the sealing groove, ensuring a tight fit.

2. Repairing or replacing damaged seals: If the seal has only a small hole and is not located at a critical contact point, you can apply a special sealant (such as oil-resistant sealant for agricultural machinery) to the damaged area and allow it to dry completely before reinstalling. If the damage is severe, replace it with a new one to avoid further damage. Be careful during installation; gently push it with your hand, do not pry it with tools, to prevent further damage.

3. Properly install the seals: Before installation, clean the sealing groove, wiping away dust and oil with a cloth. Then check the correct orientation of the seal (usually, the lip side of the seal should face the inside of the bearing, i.e., the side with lubricating oil). Align the seal with the sealing groove and press it down evenly, ensuring the seal is fully embedded in the groove without any misalignment or warping. After installation, rotate the bearing by hand to check for smooth operation, then start the machine for a test run and observe for any oil leaks.
