What adaptation strategies should be adopted for batch feeding of extruded pellet feed machines for different formulations of raw materials?

Many users use the same batch feeding method when processing different raw materials with extruded pellet feed machines. They find that feeding is smooth when processing cornmeal, but frequently encounters problems when processing fishmeal – either clogging or uneven feeding leading to poor pellet quality. In fact, different raw materials require different batch feeding methods. "Tailoring the approach" to the characteristics of the raw material is essential to ensure feeding effectiveness. Below, we will discuss batch feeding techniques for grains, protein-based feeds, and mixed feeds.

Production line operation steps

  1. First, batch feeding of grain-based raw materials (corn flour, wheat flour). These raw materials are dry, free-flowing, and not prone to clumping, so the feeding speed can be appropriately increased to improve batch feeding efficiency. For manual feeding, open the hopper valve to 3/4 full, and feed at a rate slightly higher than 90% of the machine's rated capacity per minute. For example, if the machine can process 600 kg per hour, feed 9-10 kg per minute, as the good flowability of the raw materials prevents easy clogging. For fully automatic feeding, set the electronic scale to 120-150 kg per batch and increase the conveyor belt speed to ensure rapid raw material transport. At the same time, do not install a stirring paddle at the inlet to avoid excessive agitation that could cause dust to be stirred up; a simple dust cover is sufficient to reduce dust pollution.
  2. Next, batch feeding of protein-based raw materials (fish meal, shrimp meal). These raw materials are hygroscopic and highly viscous, so the feeding speed should be slowed down, and anti-clogging measures should be taken. For manual feeding, the hopper valve should be opened only halfway, and the feeding rate per minute should be set to 70%-80% of the machine's rated capacity. For example, if the machine processes 500 kg per hour, feed 6-7 kg per minute. Simultaneously, install a stirring paddle in the hopper at 30 revolutions per minute to loosen the raw materials. For fully automatic feeding, set the batch feeding rate to 80-100 kg, slow down the conveyor belt speed, and install a vibrator at the feed inlet to prevent the raw materials from sticking. Additionally, protein-based raw materials should be stored in a dry warehouse before processing to prevent moisture absorption. If the raw materials are slightly damp, sun-dry them for 1-2 hours before batch feeding.
  3. Finally, batch feeding of mixed raw materials (grains + protein + trace elements) is crucial. These raw materials have complex compositions, with different components exhibiting varying flowability and viscosity. The key to feeding is to first mix the raw materials evenly, and then control the feeding speed. First, mix all raw materials in a mixer for 5-8 minutes before feeding to ensure even distribution of grains, protein, and trace elements. Then, when feeding in batches, use a feeding speed that is the midpoint between the grain and protein feed rates. For example, if the machine's rated capacity is 500 kg per hour, feed 7-8 kg per minute. For manual feeding, frequently check the raw materials in the hopper. If stratification is observed (e.g., grains sink to the bottom and protein floats on top), stir with a wooden stick. For fully automatic feeding, install a "secondary mixing plate" in the middle of the conveyor belt. This allows the raw materials to mix again as they pass through, ensuring a uniform composition of the raw materials entering the machine and preventing uneven feeding due to stratification, which would affect the quality of the extruded pellets.
