In the production of pet food, common raw materials include cereal flour, vegetable proteins, vitamins, and minerals; occasionally, fresh meat and meat or fish flour are also utilized.
The dry materials are steam-hydrated after entering the pre-conditioner. Steam, moisture, and substances are properly mixed and blended by the counter-rotary twin shaft unit. Texturing of polymers and partial gelatinization of starches are the results of preconditioning.They feed the twin-screw extruder the partially cooked mixture. The ideal starch gelatinization is achieved without sacrificing food quality by precisely controlling shearing, internal temperature, pressure, moisture, and residence periods. During different processing phases, apertures in the extruder barrel can be used to inject liquids or steam. Using a vent-stuffer at this point allows for degassing.
The extrusion of the granules via the die then shapes them. A dryer is subsequently used to remove the moisture, usually between 8 and 10%. After coating, seasoning, and fat additions, the product is cooled and packaged.
