Can raw materials be fed directly into a pellet mill without being crushed?

Don't try to save time and effort by feeding raw materials directly into the pellet mill without crushing them; problems will arise. First, the machine is prone to breakage: large raw materials can clog the feed screw, causing anything from minor shutdowns to severe damage to the pressure rollers and ring die. Replacing these parts can cost hundreds of dollars, making it more expensive in the long run.

Second, the feed quality is poor: uncrushed raw materials produce very loose pellets that crumble easily when squeezed by hand, creating dust during transportation and feeding, resulting in more than half of the feed being wasted. Furthermore, the nutrients within the pellets are unevenly distributed. For example, mixing whole corn kernels with fine fishmeal will result in pellets that are entirely corn and entirely fishmeal, leading to nutritional imbalances and uneven growth in livestock.

Most importantly, it affects breeding outcomes: large pellets are difficult for livestock to eat; young animals cannot eat them, and even adult livestock digest them slowly, resulting in undigested raw materials in their feces-essentially a waste of feed. A duck farmer once made this mistake by directly pressing whole wheat grains into feed. As a result, the ducks' droppings were full of whole wheat husks, and the ducks became thin and had frequent diarrhea. Later, the problem was immediately solved by grinding the wheat into powder before making feed.
