How to troubleshoot oil leaks caused by wear on pellet mill bearings?

If a pellet mill bearing has been used for a long time and gradually starts to leak oil, and the noise and vibration during operation become increasingly louder, it is very likely due to bearing wear. Bearings are like the "joints" of a pellet mill; after long-term wear, the gaps between these "joints" widen, making it impossible to seal the lubricating oil, naturally leading to leakage. Below, we will discuss the causes of oil leakage due to bearing wear and their solutions.

Causes of Oil Leakage

1. Rolling element wear: The rolling elements of a bearing (such as steel balls and rollers) bear the load of the pellet mill over a long period, gradually wearing down and becoming rough. During operation, they impact the inner and outer rings, increasing the bearing's radial runout. Increased runout leads to unstable contact between the seals and the bearing, creating gaps that allow lubricating oil to leak out. In severe cases, the rolling elements may even develop pits and deformation, further damaging the sealing structure.

2. Bearing inner and outer ring wear: During pellet mill operation, the inner and outer rings of the bearing rub against the rolling elements. Prolonged friction causes wear on the raceway surfaces of the inner and outer rings, making them uneven. With worn raceways, the bearing will wobble during operation, and the seals cannot maintain a tight seal, leading to lubricating oil leakage. Furthermore, wear on the inner and outer rings can also increase the radial clearance of the bearing, exacerbating oil leakage.

Solution

1. Replacing worn bearings: First, determine the degree of bearing wear. If the rolling elements, inner and outer rings show significant wear, pitting, or the cage is broken, the bearing must be replaced. Before replacement, record the bearing model (e.g., 6205, NU206, etc.) and purchase a genuine bearing of the same model. During replacement, first clean the journal and bearing housing to remove oil and impurities, then install the new bearing, ensuring correct installation without misalignment. After installation, add sufficient lubricating oil, start the machine for a test run, observe for any oil leaks, and listen to whether the operating noise is normal.

2. Preventive measures to reduce bearing wear: To avoid premature bearing wear, add lubricating oil regularly to keep the bearing adequately lubricated. Also, clean the pellet mill regularly to reduce dust and debris entering the bearing and prevent impurities from wearing it. Additionally, avoid prolonged overload operation of the pellet mill; for example, do not allow the machine to operate at maximum feed rate for extended periods to reduce the load on the bearing and extend its lifespan.
