Cereal flour, vegetable proteins, minerals, vitamins, and occasionally meat or fish flour and fresh meat are common basic ingredients used in the production of pet food.
After entering the pre-conditioner, the dry ingredients undergo steam hydration. The materials are blended and the steam, moisture, and ingredients are properly mixed by the counter-rotary twin shaft unit. Preconditioning results in polymer texturing and partial starch gelatinization.

The twin-screw extruder is then fed the partially cooked mixture. To achieve optimal starch gelatinization without sacrificing food quality, precise controls are made on shearing, internal temperature, pressure, moisture, and residence periods. At different stages of processing, apertures in the extruder barrel can be used to inject liquids or steam. At this point, a vent-stuffer can be used to degas.
After extrusion via the die, the granules are shaped. After that, they are dried, which lowers the moisture content (usually between 8 and 10%). After coating, fat and flavoring are added, and the product is cooled and packaged.

The pellet feed production process is standardized and regularized, ensuring consistent nutritional content, particle size, and hardness across each batch, eliminating the instability associated with traditional homemade feeds. This standardization ensures consistent nutrient supply for fish and shrimp at different stages of growth, resulting in more uniform growth rates and sizes and reduced individual variation. For example, in sea bass farming, using standardized pellet feeds can limit the size variation of adult fish to less than 10%, significantly lower than the 20%-30% observed with homemade feeds, facilitating uniform harvesting and sales.
