What is the working principle of the pellet feed extruder

Against the background of the growing demand for personalized pet food, modern pet feed production lines have become flexible production platforms with customization capabilities that can flexibly adjust production plans according to different pet breeds, physiological stages, health conditions and consumer needs. For example, to meet the low-calcium and easy-to-digest needs of elderly pets, the production line can produce special feed by adjusting the raw material ratio (increasing dietary fiber, reducing calcium content) and the granulation process (using small particles, soft particle design); for pets with allergies, the production line can avoid cross-contamination of allergens by replacing raw materials (such as using grain-free formula, single protein source) and enabling a special cleaning process; for the high-end pet food market, the production line can also integrate special process modules such as freeze-drying and baking to produce products with unique taste and nutritional retention. A pet feed machine functions as an integrated system that converts raw, mixed ingredients into safe, palatable pet food, with each component working in coordination. The process begins with ingredient batching: using an automated weighing system, the machine measures out key components-such as carbohydrates (rice, oats), proteins (beef meal, egg powder), fats, and essential nutrients (calcium, taurine)-based on pre-programmed formulas. For example, a cat food formula might include more taurine, while dog food may have higher fiber content. This step ensures every batch meets the nutritional needs of specific pet species or life stages.

 

Next, the batched ingredients are transported to a mixing chamber, where a spiral or paddle mixer blends them for 5–8 minutes until they form a homogeneous powder mixture. This uniformity is critical because it prevents some feed pieces from having too many nutrients and others too few. After mixing, the material is fed into a conditioning cylinder, where saturated steam is introduced. The steam heats the mixture to 70–90°C and increases its moisture to 16–20%, making the material flexible and ready for shaping.

 

The core working stage is extrusion or pelleting. In extrusion machines, two interlocking screws (twin-screw design) rotate inside a heated barrel, applying both mechanical pressure and thermal energy. This combination causes the material to undergo physical and chemical changes: starch gelatinizes, proteins coagulate, and any harmful microbes (like Salmonella) are killed at high temperatures (120–150°C). The material is then forced through a die with small holes, and a rotating cutter at the die exit cuts it into kibble of the desired length (usually 3–5 mm). For pellet machines, a single screw pushes the material into a ring die, and rollers press it through the die holes to form solid pellets-this method is often used for wet or semi-moist pet food.

 

After shaping, the feed is cooled to remove excess heat and moisture. A counter-flow cooler blows cool air through the feed, reducing its temperature from 80–100°C to ambient temperature and lowering moisture to 11–13%, which extends shelf life. Some machines also include a grading step to separate 合格 products from defects, and a flavoring system to spray on meat juices or other attractants. The final step is discharging the finished feed into a storage hopper, where it waits to be packaged for distribution.
