What skills should I learn before using an extruder machine for pet food?

A solid understanding of common raw material characteristics is fundamental to training. Operators must be familiar with the physical and chemical properties of commonly used pet food ingredients, including grains (corn, rice, wheat), proteins (fish meal, chicken meal, soybean meal), fruits and vegetables (sweet potato flour, carrot flour), and additives (probiotics, vitamins). Grains are rich in starch; corn flour, with its low gelatinization temperature (62-72℃), is suitable for producing basic pellets, while wheat flour, containing gluten, can improve pellet binding. Among protein ingredients, fish meal, with its high fat content, requires temperature control to prevent oxidation, while chicken meal requires attention to moisture content to prevent mold growth. Fruits and vegetables, with their high fiber content, easily absorb moisture, resulting in poor flowability, necessitating the use of specialized feeding devices. Training should establish raw material characteristic files, clearly defining the appropriate parameter ranges for different raw materials.

Training on raw material proportions and equipment parameter compatibility is crucial. When producing compound formula pet food, the parameters of the full automatic pet food machine need to be adjusted according to the raw material ratio. For example, when producing dog food containing 30% chicken meal, the barrel temperature needs to be appropriately increased (140-150℃) to promote protein denaturation, while the rotation speed needs to be reduced (200-250 rpm) to prolong the residence time. When producing natural pet food containing 20% sweet potato flour, due to the high viscosity of sweet potato flour, the feeding speed needs to be increased and the barrel cooling water volume increased to prevent the raw material from sticking to the walls. For products containing heat-sensitive ingredients such as probiotics, the "post-coating" technique needs to be mastered. This involves adding the probiotics through a special device after extrusion to avoid high temperatures destroying their activity; this also needs to be emphasized in training.

Raw material pretreatment and equipment compatibility training are also indispensable. Different raw materials require corresponding pretreatment. For example, coarse-grained meat meal needs to be pre-crushed to at least 80 mesh, and high-fiber fruit and vegetable powder needs to be pre-mixed with grain powder to improve flowability. Operators need to master the coordinated operation of pretreatment equipment (crushers, mixers) and pet food machinery, and adjust extruder parameters according to the state of the pretreated raw materials (particle size, moisture content, and mixing uniformity) to ensure smooth production. Training should include hands-on exercises to allow operators to accumulate experience in adjusting parameters for different raw material combinations and improve their ability to handle complex formulations.
