Raw material compatibility and equipment debugging are prerequisites. The extrusion mode should be selected based on the type of pet food: for puppy food production, low-temperature extrusion is preferred, using a twin-screw extruder equipped with a cooling jacket to prevent localized overheating; for adult dog food production, the temperature can be appropriately increased to enhance the chewiness of the kibble. A small-batch trial production is necessary before startup, using 50kg of raw material to test parameters. For example, chicken-flavored dog food is best suited to a screw speed of 250 rpm and a temperature of 92℃, while fish-flavored cat food is best suited to a screw speed of 230 rpm and a temperature of 83℃. Mass production should only proceed after determining the optimal parameters. Simultaneously, check the extruder's flavor retention device to ensure the outlet cooling system can reduce the feed temperature to below 40℃ within 10 minutes, minimizing flavor evaporation.

 

Detailed control during operation determines quality. A "gradient feeding" mode should be used in the feeding process. Initially, feed at 50% of the rated speed, gradually increasing to 100% (100kg/h) after the equipment stabilizes, avoiding parameter fluctuations caused by raw material impact. Real-time monitoring of pellet indicators is crucial, with sampling and testing every 30 minutes. Puppy food hardness should be controlled at 18-22N, and adult dog food at 25-30N. If hardness is too high, reduce the extrusion temperature by 3-5℃; if too low, increase the ring die compression ratio. When producing feed containing probiotics, a post-addition process should be used after extrusion to prevent probiotic inactivation at high temperatures and ensure the live bacteria count meets standards.

 

Equipment maintenance and hygiene management are essential. After each shutdown, disassemble the extruder screw and barrel, and use specialized tools to clean residual feed, especially at the discharge port and ring die, to prevent grease residue and mold growth. Perform a deep cleaning of the equipment weekly, soaking parts in a neutral detergent for 30 minutes, rinsing, and then disinfecting with ultraviolet light for 30 minutes, meeting food-grade hygiene standards. Regularly check the transmission system and add food-grade grease monthly to ensure smooth screw operation. Establish a quality traceability system, linking the operating parameters of each batch of extruders with product testing results for subsequent optimization and adjustments.
