Production process description
The process starts with fiber material treatment: roughage (alfalfa hay, corn stover, wheat straw) is cut into 2–4 cm segments using a hay cutter, then crushed into 3–5 mm particles (coarser than monogastric animal feed) to maintain fiber structure-critical for ruminant rumen fermentation. Concentrates (corn, soybean meal, cottonseed meal) are crushed into 2–3 mm particles separately.
Second, ingredient mixing with roughage-concentrate balance: the crushed roughage and concentrates are mixed in a vertical mixer according to the formula (e.g., 60% roughage, 40% concentrate). Additives like urea (for nitrogen supplementation), mineral premixes, and rumen-protected amino acids are added; urea is mixed carefully (≤1% of total feed) to avoid toxicity. The mixing time is 5–8 minutes to ensure the roughage and concentrates are evenly distributed.
Third, low-temperature conditioning and pelletizing: the mixed material is sent to a pellet mill's conditioning chamber, where low-temperature steam (60–70°C, not exceeding 80°C) is injected to increase moisture to 15–17%-high temperatures would destroy rumen-friendly microorganisms and degrade fiber. The conditioned material is pressed by rollers through a die with large holes (4–8 mm diameter) to form hard pellets (hardness 6–10 kg/cm²), which resist breaking during transportation.
Fourth, natural cooling and packaging: unlike extruded feed, ruminant pelleted feed is cooled naturally in a ventilated area (1–2 hours) to reduce moisture to ≤13%-artificial cooling may cause rapid moisture loss and pellet cracking. After cooling, the pellets are screened to remove powder, then packaged into 50kg woven bags. No coating is needed, as ruminants have low requirements for palatability, and excess oil would disrupt rumen fermentation.
