The degree of expansion of aquafeeds refers to the increase in volume of the feed under conditions of heat and is usually expressed in terms of standardized degree of expansion (SFC). The degree of expansion depends on factors such as the composition of the feed, particle size, heat temperature and time.
Excessive degree of expansion can lead to over-expansion of the feed, which wastes feed and increases pollution of the water environment, potentially causing problems such as restricted water flow and oiling of the water surface. In addition, the high expansion degree of feed will also affect the digestion and absorption of fish, so that the nutrients in the feed can not be fully utilized, thus affecting the growth and health of fish.
1. Adopt appropriate temperature and time
By adjusting the temperature and time of heat treatment, the degree of expansion of feed can be controlled. In general, the appropriate expansion temperature is 110-130℃ and the expansion time is 30-60 seconds. Excessive temperature and time will lead to excessive expansion degree.
2. Reduce the starch content in ingredients
The higher the content of starch in the feed, the higher the degree of puffing, so reducing the content of starch can effectively reduce the degree of puffing. It is possible to replace part of the starch by adding a certain amount of non-starch carbohydrates, plant proteins and other methods.
3. Adopting multi-layer structure pellets
Aquafeeds using multilayer structure pellets can control the degree of expansion of the pellets, thus reducing the degree of expansion of the whole feed. The preparation process of multilayer structured pellets is more complicated, but the effect is remarkable.

According to different working principles, the puffing machine can be divided into dry puffing machine and wet puffing machine. Dry puffing machine rely on mechanical friction and extrusion of materials under pressure and temperature treatment, this method is suitable for the processing of raw materials containing more water and oil, such as full-fat soybean puffing. For other materials containing less water and oil, in the extrusion process need to add steam or water, often using wet puffer.
